Wild Silk Golden Caps | Stitching Felt Jewellery Collage
These beautiful cocoons are naturally golden and lacy and are at their most beautiful used in their natural form as embellishments and surface decoration or trims. Or incorporate them into felting or weavings or even to make paper!
The cocoons are sprinkled with small, uneven holes which create the beautiful, lacy effect. The natural golden color of Cricula wild silk cocoons is due to natural pigments present in the silk produced by the Cricula trifenestrata moth. Unlike mulberry silk, which is white because the silkworms feed exclusively on mulberry leaves, Cricula silkworms feed on a variety of host plants, including oak and cashew trees. The pigments from these leaves contribute to the unique golden hue of the silk.
You will see several photos here where we have pressed the cocoons flat with a medium heat iron to form lovely golden discs - the possibilities are endless!
Cruelty free, the lacy caps are harvested after the new pupae has left the cocoon.
There are approximately 200 cocoons per packet - lots to play with! Each Cocoon is approximately 1 1/2 inch (4.5cm) to 1 3/4 inches (5cm) long and almost as light as air.
We currently have bags of imperfect Golden Silk Cocoons available here at 50% off.
